Spotlight on…

Edisford Bridge is around a 15 minute walk from the centre of Clitheroe and is a popular riverside area for friends and families to meet up, especially over the summer months when the sun’s out. If Clitheroe had a beach, this would be it!

The bridge itself at Edisford incorporates a structure that dates back to around 1339, when a grant of pontage (crossing) was made.

Today the bridge has nine spans and is considerably wider than the original. It is thought that a timber bridge had been constructed on the same spot before that date. Edisford (‘The nobleman’s ford’ or Anglo-Saxon nobleman) was the scene of an 1139 battle, where King David of Scotland’s army fought and defeated the less numerous Lancastrians.

The Ribble at Edisford Bridge is a popular location for swimming, paddling and picnics. When the river level is low, a gently sloping shingle beach is exposed.

In addition to a playground and miniature railway, there are footpaths along the river to follow where you relax and picnic on the banks or maybe enjoy an ice cream from the visiting van. There’s also a conveniently located pub, helpfully called The Edisford Bridge!
